“The thinking that got you into your problem will never get you out!”
James Richards Wired for Success Programmed for Failure
Been thinking about the above quote and wondering how often it applies to me. Too often I suspect.
I've been doing a trial run with a colour palette that I've not used (successfully) before in preparation for a commissioned, multi-canvas piece I'm to do. Greys, black, silver and purple. Love these colours but boy do I have a hard time painting with them. So odd, and I figure, time to change that in light of the quote I've been chomping on all week!
Have the new canvas prepped and ready for paint.

This looks like it will be an awesome piece.
ReplyDeleteVery attractive picture!
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful, a composition as delicate as a poem, and yet with great force. I love the texture, colors and especially the volume.
ReplyDeleteyay you!
ReplyDeletea commission - how exciting!!!
The second purple image down looks like the hilt of a sword.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, go to Wikipedia and take a look at their entry for "hilt" ... it's eerie.

magnificent!
ReplyDeletebloom, Bren, bloom!
I love that quote....such wisdom.
You are a treasure
and so treasured:)
so much love,
Jennifer
Thanks all!
ReplyDeleteCountry, that is just too cool it does look like the hilt of that sword !
There is an elegant beauty to the prepped unpainted canvas too. Interesting works.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your commissioned work!!! I totally understand the dilemma with working with a different color palette. It's a good stretch though! I do love these colors your working with and the foundational textural design. Looking forward to seeing how these piece evolves.
ReplyDeleteA commissioned piece Yeah!!!! Can't wait for the end results!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI love your new work. When I look not imagine how it will stop once painted.
ReplyDeleteI know you will make this color palette work for you. Its a good problem to have as problems go. We could all push ourselves a little further with new color palettes!
ReplyDeletePurple is my color so LOVE this last piece.
ReplyDeleteI love seeing the "prepped" version.
ReplyDeleteCOOL! Purple and silver - very astronomical.
ReplyDeleteSometimes it can be a big ask working with colours that we're not used to. Push right on through the discomfort curtain until you've ripped it to shreds!
Looking brilliant Bren!
Wow. Just wow. I mean look at those colors and texture. Every time I see your work I 'feel' something. That doesn't happen to me very often when I look at most of the art I see. You are truly awesome, do you know that? And I love that quote.
ReplyDeleteForgot to add that the last image looks SO much like bleached barnacles and coral tubes - uncanny!
ReplyDeleteI like it Bren! Love how you have swirled those colors to meld in and out from each other and the prepped canvas is beautiful all by itself.
ReplyDeleteThat quote is soooo the truth and I need to apply it more to my own life.
However did you get into doing commissioning work? Does it ever put extra pressure on you to produce and take the love of creating away? It doesn't seem like it's been a problem for you because your art is always filled with such passion.

Cindy knowing that gives me lots of new ideas for pieces :-)
ReplyDeleteSo appreciate all your thoughtful comments. LeeAnn about commissioned work, there is more pressure of course when you know this is going to a specific person and like this new one when they've requested a colour palette that I've not worked in, but bottom line is, they have to like what I do, my style and way of doing things. Knowing that, I still feel the freedom of creating and very much enjoy the challenges of developing a piece, it doesn't seem to stifle my creativity so long as I don't let their voice get in my head while I'm creating :-)
